Dental Exams and Cleanings
Dental exams and cleanings are recommended every 6 months to prevent dental problems and to maintain a healthy teeth and gums. At each visit the dental hygienist will clean, floss and remove plaque and tartar from your teeth. They will also examine your teeth for decay, cavities, and any existing fillings, crowns, bridges, as well as the health of your gums. Once complete, the dentist will do a final check and review any areas the dental hygienist may request. This is also the best time to mention any problems you are having with your teeth, gums, or mouth, so the dentist can diagnose if there is an issue.

How to Properly Floss
To properly floss your teeth break off about 18 inches of dental floss and wind it around your middle fingers leaving an inch or two to floss with. Hold the floss tightly with your thumbs and index fingers and slide the floss back-and-forth between the teeth. At the base of the teeth, curve the floss around each tooth then bring the floss back up with the same motion. Select a fresh area of floss and repeat with all of your teeth. Some people have a trouble getting floss between some teeth; in this situation try waxed dental floss. For more information on how to floss visit

Dental Home Care
In between visits, we would like to see our patients brush their teeth with fluoride toothpaste and a soft-bristled toothbrush three times a day at least: after breakfast, lunch, and before bed. Students may not be able to brush after lunch, but after school would be great.

Dental X-Rays
Dental x-rays are performed yearly to detect tooth decay, tumours, cysts, and bone loss. An x-ray may be performed more frequently if the dentist is monitoring the position of the teeth and roots. It is not recommended to have an x-ray if you are pregnant and the hygienist will ask female patients prior to examination.
